Challenging Impairment to Creating Impact
In 2003, at age 19, Bahati became visually impaired due to long-term use of eye drops for an allergy. After rehabilitation, he faced isolation and stigma, with few opportunities for peer support among other youth with disabilities. In 2010, he attended a one-year training in social entrepreneurship at the Kanthari Institute in Kerala, India. Inspired by this experience, he returned home and founded UWEZO on January 15, 2013—the first cross-disability organization created by youth with disabilities. Through his visionary leadership, Bahati energized the disability movement, empowering young people with disabilities to overcome stigma, participate actively in community initiatives, and engage in national programs that promote youth and economic development.
